House of Sand and Fog

Book Discussion Group-Tuesday, January 20, 2004

The book for discussion in January for the Graduates was House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus III ( in paperback 365 pp). This suspenseful novel was a National Book Award finalist in 1999 and is due out as a movie this month.

The story centers on an elite Iranian immigrant who fled Iran with the deposed Shah. His out-of-sync values in this country and attempts to restore family dignity lead to legal and emotional conflict over a small, California house.
The inability of book characters to get their lives together, even with Herculean effort, evokes both reader sympathy and disgust. The headlong rush to a tragic ending may not please those who prefer smiley-face conclusions to their novels.

Elaine Brody led the event.
