The clan begins to gather on the Summer Solstice, 2002. |

P6210005.jpg
Suzanne, Michael and Dorothy start the setting up. |

P6210006.jpg
Laurie Anderson, Suzanne Amstutz and host Elden Dellanina. |

Roger Hoyt takes the pictures posted elsewhere on this page. |

P6210009.jpg
Elden and Sandy Dellanina contemplate the evening's events to follow. |

P6210015.jpg
Berkeley Meigs and Dorothy Dearman work the flowers. |
P6210017.jpg
While Michael Koelsch, Laurie Anderson and Michael McCaleb set up elsewhere.
Lot of Michaels in this group! |
P6210019.jpg
Dorothy Dearman and Ellen Lilleu prepare their flower headpieces. |
P6210021.jpg
The Graduates icon keeps watch, making good use of the portion of the
Dellaninas' home being remodeled. |
P6210024.jpg
Berkeley again, and Darlene Amundsen - more flowers! |
P6210028.jpg
...and a friendly Jay keeps excess seeds (and bugs?) under control. |
P6210035.jpg
Ellen LIley and Michael Koelsch go over some Graduates Club fine points.
Looks like a serious confab! |
P6210038.jpg
While Berkeley gets face-painted for the occasion by Michael McCaleb. |
P6210041.jpg
A dolphin tops the Santa Barbara Solstice Festival logo. |
P6210043.jpg
Our host shows off a high-school band jacket -- he still fits! Gilroy
is said to be the "garlic capital of the world." We went to the Garlic
Festival there.- like a county fair but EVERYTHING made from or with garlic...but
that's another story. |

P6210044.jpg
Michael Scar regards the finished floral headwear. |

P6210047.jpg
Hermine Baker joins the group, with flowers, too. |

P6210051.jpg
Michael McCaleb's self-taught Solstice poster art! |

P6210056.jpg
Jerry Jensen, Nancy Lieberman and Stephanie Larsson. |

P6210062.jpg
Hermine takes a crack at Solstice music-making. |

P6210071.jpg
A general view of the improbable crowd. There's Jack Weigel to the
far left, without a flowered cap! (And without a hot-dog hat, for that
matter!) |
P6210076.jpg
And then the dancing started once evening shadows fell... |
P6210079.jpg
Now there's forced perspective and tricks of the early-evening light,
not the attack of the 10-foot tall woman! Hollywood does that all the time,
on purpose. With me it just happens once in a while... |
P6210083.jpg
Drew Weiman in the good company of Dennis Forster! |

P6210096.jpg
Sondra and Bernie Krakower put in an appearance on the dance ... lawn. |
P6210105.jpg
Is Dorothy having a good time? And this may be my only shot of Larry
Larsson to the right in the picture. |
P6210107.jpg
Bernie, Hermine and Drew accompany the drummers. |

P6220114.jpg
Jump-cut -- Suddenly it's a day later, and Laurie Anderson and Ellen
Lilley join the crowd at the Santa Barbara Summer Solstice Parade. See
the lumpy thing above the crowd across the street? That's art. Part of
the current outdoor display. Controversial. |
P6220115.jpg
"Parade's a'comin'!" See the confetti all over the guy to the right.
That's typical. A lot of fun and very messy. The city is about to ban the
sale of "Silly String". Too hard to clean up after it bakes on the sidewalk
in the sun for a while. |
P6220117.jpg
Well, the kid needs a haircut. The Condor was a whale-watching boat
harbored at Santa Barbara; as Newcomers, we used the boat for dances and
barbecues. It was recently replaced by the new jet powered Condor II. |
P6220121.jpg
Solstice is a goofy time - unpredictable. But good seats for a view
of the parade... |
P6220135.jpg
This was a "pile-of-metal-junk float. The parade folk handed out lengths
of pipe and invited watchers to beat the heck out of it. Weird, but in
character! |
P6220140.jpg
I didn't "get" this one. Must have something to do with George Bush
and Texas? |
P6220142.jpg
Solstice. Self-explanatory? Don;t miss the "poodles" in the background. |
P6220144.jpg
There's one of those poodles now after the parade's all said and done
-- If he catches that stuff on fire, well... |
