Best known for his biographies of Ronald Reagan and his
social history of the 1992 Los Angeles riots, Lou Cannon was known to his
colleagues at The Washington Post as a “reporter’s reporter.” He is now
a contributing editor to the California Journal and a free-lancer who lectures
and writes on the presidency, police issues, the media,
and California politics. After covering Reagan’s first
term as governor of California for the San Jose Mercury-News, he has written
5 Reagan biographies. During the Reagan presidency, Cannon was senior White
House correspondent for the Washington Post and wrote a weekly syndicated
column.
He has won many awards for “distinguished reporting of public affairs,” “The Best Newspaper White House Correspondent,” for excellence in presidential news coverage, among others. Other books written include The McCloskey Challenge (1972) and Official Negligence: How Rodney King and the Riots Changed Los Angeles and the LAPD (1998). - He attended the Univ. of Nevada and San Francisco State College.
