The Graduates' First Hiking Event, March 1, 2003
(Scroll down for pictures)
Elden? This popular trail heads up the picturesque San Ysidro Canyon along the cascading San Ysidro Creek. The steep, narrow upper canyon is filled with small waterfalls, continuous cascades and pools. We will pass Gateway Rock, a large eroded sandstone wall, and watch the rock climbers ascend (those of you who want to do this, we promise to take lots of pictures!!).

The hike leads to San Ysidro Falls, a beautiful 60-foot waterfall. Moderate difficulty for 1.5 miles, where you can choose to sunbathe on the huge rocks (even swim and jump into a deep pool!!). Bring your bathing suit if you wish. Then, the hiking becomes more challenging, up switchbacks with steeper ascent, crossing a stream and up to the base of San Ysidro Falls. Going up 10 more minutes on a narrow trail, you can get a view of the ocean. You may choose to wait at the rocks (half an hour) or the falls (10 minutes) until the rest of the group descends to meet you and we will all continue to the bottom.

Allow two and a half hours overall. Water, hat, sunscreen and hiking boots are recommended. Camera optional!

Lunch at the San Ysidro Pharmacy in Montecito's Upper Village was an enjoyable after-event!

When and Where: Saturday, March 1 at 9 a.m. Drive on 101 to the San Ysidro exit. Drive one mile north to East Valley Road and turn right. Continue .8 miles to Park Lane and turn left. Drive .3 miles to East Mountain Drive and bear to the left. The trailhead is .2 miles ahead on the right. Park along East Mountain Drive. We will meet at the trailhead.

Cost: None except for lunch

Reservations: Please RSVP, especially if you want to go out to lunch. We can then let them know we are coming. Otherwise, just show up! Rain does cancel. Family and friends are welcome.

Notes: This hike was Elden Dellanina's idea, for the Graduates' first hiking event, and we'd like for it to become a monthly one. As Spring arrives, we'll all be toning up and "getting into shape"! Let's hear your ideas for future hikes.

Seven brave Graduates set out to discover the falls on San Ysidro Creek, with a hike
up the canyon, rising some 1,200 feet in a couple of miles. A moderate climb, with much scenery,
enjoyed on one of Santa Barbara's legendary "perfect days".

The top of the waterfall can be seen in the picture center. Elden wants to get a picture from the top one of these days -- gonna take ropes and some bravery.
