Getting set: Here are Mary Freericks, Roger Hoyt, Gladys Almo, Evelyn
Kert, Darlene Amundsen, Ellen Lilley and Carole Lazar.

And, the group including Bob Lilley.. a Roger Hoyt picture.

The natural bridge between Goleta Beach and UCSB territory.

On the bluffs near UCSB. Evelyn, Bob, Mary and Carole.
|
P8091818.jpg
...and the nice bluff-top trail through the campus.
|
P8091820.jpg
We reach the Marine Research building with its patio overlooking the
Pacific and the UCSB lagoon
|
PICT0010.jpg
Same picture, different angle.
|
P8091821.jpg
Evelyn and Roger compare notes, while Gladys, Ellen, Darlene, Carole
and Mary contemplate the big water.
|
P8091833.jpg
And we're off to circle the lagoon.
|
P8091834.jpg
This is the only real "climb" on the route, up from the beach to the
bluff-tops.
|
P8091835.jpg
|
P8091836.jpg
These old roads and evidence of buildings are left over from the days
when this area was a Marine base. Nice duty, huh?
|
PICT0013.jpg
|
P8091837.jpg
A signature shot of the lagoon, with wildlife.
|
PICT0015.jpg
Roger caught an excellent egret pose.
|
P8091839.jpg
This looks to be an attempt to kill off some non-native plants near
the beach. Ice-plant gets started and crowds out the native species...So,
the ice-plant gets covered with black plastic, which generates just a little
heat!
|
P8091841.jpg
The Isla Vista bluffs. Many UCSB students live there, near the campus.
|
P8091842.jpg
Down toward the western finger of the lagoon.

P8091843.jpg
Looking north across the lagoon, the campus and the carrillon tower.
|
P8091844.jpg
A grebe looks us over.
|
PICT0019.jpg
The group concentrates on some waterfowl.
|
P8091845.jpg
Don't know their name...but they obviously "belong"...
|
PICT0021.jpg
|
PICT0020.jpg
...even if they are a little shy.
|
P8091848.jpg
This would appear to be a tree full of cormorants. Every once in a
while one would swoop down to the surface for a little fishing expedition.
Note the lineup on the log near the water's edge.
|
PICT0023.jpg
Speaking of swooping, check out the low-altitude approach to the water.
|
PICT0025.jpg
And maybe a successful fishing foray?
|
P8091851.jpg
A cormorant holds court with a few brown pelicans.
|
P8091855.jpg
At the end of our trek, we visited one of the marine labs, where a
close-up look at some critters is possible. These are (I believe) shark
egg cases, with live embryos inside, visible through the glass.
|
P8091856.jpg
...and some jellyfish...
|
P8091858.jpg
Ellen and Darlene look over the starfish and other bottom-dwellers.
|
PICT0031.jpg
|
PICT0032.jpg
...these guys.
|
P8091859.jpg
...as do Carole and Evelyn
|
P8091861.jpg
Bob and Roger, backed up by Evelyn, Ellen and Darlene.
|
P8091863.jpg
The group splits up at the steps down to the beach. Bob and Roger braved
the sand-flies and accumulated seaweed on the beach; the others chose the
bluff-top trail back to the reataurant.
|
P8091866.jpg
The view from the beach. That natural bridge is just around the bend,
ahead...the reataurant is near the pier -- that's the goal!
|
PICT0033.jpg
Roger and Bob hit the beach...
|
PICT0034.jpg
...while others take the bluffs.
|
PICT0035.jpg
At the Beachside Restaurant following the hike, Ellen checks the menu
while Bob tries a new camera mode...
