The BIG Big Jazz Concert
The Röke Blås Band

On July 2nd, at 7 pm, on the grounds of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on Fairview Ave in Goleta, a 65-member band from Sweden appeared with its mixture of jazz and christian tunes. A number of Graduates brought chairs, blankets and picnic baskets to the big grassy area next to the church.

We saw Berkeley Meigs and Michael McCaleb, Dorothy Dearman and Darlene Amundsen, Ellen and Bob Lilley, Jack and Marlene Sheehan, Norm Jacobs and Marilyn Conrad, and Peter and Juliana Kimball.

A featured soloist was trombonist Vincent Nillson. Well-known in northern Europe, he has also played with the likes of Stan Getz, Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie.

The band formed 50 years ago and is on its seventh US tour. It will have performed 17 concerts by the end of this year's tour, down the coast from Washington, through Oregon and places like Chico, Fremont and Long Beach. The tour winds up in the Phoenix / Scottsdale, AZ region.
