Hiking with SBNC - Gaviota Wind Caves Trail - September 24 - 8:30 am
----
When: Saturday, September, 24
To car pool meet at Bank of American parking lot on upper State St at 8:30am. Leave in carpools at 8:45am.
Reservations: None. Heavy rain cancels.

Cost: None. Bring water and lunch/snacks for yourself.
Directions: From Santa Barbara, take 101 north to the Gaviota campground exit.  This exit is on the left just as 101 begins to head away from the ocean. Just before the entrance to the campground, veer to the right and drive up the hill. Park along the road across from the gate and mountain lion danger sign (You can get directions from the ranger at the campsite entrance if you get lost.)

Description: This is a semi-strenuous but short in-and-out hike. The trail begins following an old road along Gaviota creek moving inland. This part is mostly flat with lots of riparian birds. As you head towards the hills, you can see the final destination as a series of holes in the sandstone outcroppings ahead. After about 3/4 of a mile you will start an ascending switchback. Continue along the ridgeline until you come to the first wind cave. Cross through the wind cave and the trail gets much steeper with a couple of switch backs, until you reach the bottom of the second cave. To left is a trail, or you can scramble straight up (not recommended). You will see beautiful wind sculpted caves and incredible ocean vistas (marine layer permitting).
Also, since this is a posted mountain lion area, small children and dogs running free are not recommended on this hike. However, we would like as many adults as possible because they say there is strength in numbers.
