In January we are having
two concerts, on January 13th and 27th,
both on Sunday afternoons
at the usual time of 3:00 p.m. at the Unitarian Society Church.
You pay at the door $10
(remember to mention that you are with The Graduates.)
January 13th:
UCSB
Music Department Faculty members Helen Callus, viola, and Robert
Koenig, who heads
the collaborative piano program, present a program titled,
"The Seasons of Life" on
January 13th at 3:00 p.m. There are many works on
the program with references
to months or seasons. (Beethoven's 'Adagio' from
the Spring Sonata and Tchaikovsky's
'Autumn' from The Seasons, for
instance). The title also
refers to the passage of life as in the Sonata by
Shostakovich which was written
just prior to his death - actually on his
death bed and is the last
work he wrote. This poignant composition gives us
the chance to hear how he
reflects most passionately on the many stages of
his deterioration and ultimate
death. In contrast, the Sonata by Hindemith
was written at the start
of his career as a concert violist with great
romanticism and drama of
a young and ambitious 24 year old. Helen, who is
the President this year
of the American Viola Society, is a distinguished
and earlier this year, was
the featured soloist with the Chamber Orchestra.
The lively acoustics of
the Sanctuary at the Unitarian Society promise to
make this chamber music
concert a memorable event.
