THE LAST BOOK DISCUSSION OF
2009!
Better: A Surgeon's Notes
on Performance
FOURTH WEDNESDAY GROUP MEETS
OCTOBER 28
Anyone who has read Dr. Atul
Gawande's articles in the New Yorker knows that this Harvard surgeon has
a unique gift for describing medical phenomena in ways that fascinate and
inform the reader. Gawande's first book, Complications: A Surgeon's
Notes on an Imperfect Science, was a major best-seller that engagingly
made the point that doctors are people too. Publishers Weekly s review
said, These exquisitely crafted essays, in which medical subjects segue
into explorations of much larger themes, place Gawande among the best in
the field.
Gawande is a former Rhodes
Scholar and winner of a MacArthur genius award fellowship. His newest
book, Better: A Surgeon's Notes on Performance, our October
book discussion club selection, tells how doctors and patients erect barriers
to seamless and thorough care. Despite this, doctors try to better
themselves constantly in a world that is chaotic, disorganized and vexing.
A review in Bookmarks Magazine said, Gawande is a straightforward, energetic,
thoughtful writer whose essays relentlessly pull you forward & Better
contains lots of great insights about the medical profession. It is a great,
thought-provoking, fun read.
