Fourth Wednesday BOOK CLUB - September 23, 7:30 pm
FOURTH WEDNESDAY BOOK DISCUSSION CLUB--SEPTEMBER 2009

This is a special kind of Book Club.  Members are not obligated to attend monthly meetings, but simply choose which monthly selections they would like to read and discuss and come to those meetings which interest them.  If the monthly book selection peaks your interest, be sure to RSVP to the person mentioned in the monthly announcement.

Our selection this month is OUT STEALING HORSES  by Pers Petterson, a Norwegian writer.  His novel has won numerous awards, including being chosen one of the best books of 2007 by the New York Times Book Review  and receiving the 2006 Independent London Foreign Fiction Prize.  We are again the grateful recipients of the Library's "Book Club in a Bag," and have ten copies to hand out.  Your copy can be picked up at Polly Clement's home.

Excerpts from some book reviews:

"In Petterson's hands, words become spare, gorgeous prose, casting a spell over the reader, luring us into the forest, into silence, until we hear the clear voices of his characters."

"Trond Sander, a man nearing 70, has just moved in self-imposed exile to the eastern edge of Norway in a primitive cabin.  Trond's peaceful existence is interrupted by a meeting with his only neighbor, who seems familiar.  The meeting pries loose a memory from a summer day in 1948 when Trond's friend Jon suggests they go out and steal horses.  That distant summer is transformative for Trond as he reflects on the fragility of life while discovering secrets about his father's wartime activities.  Artful interplay of Trond's childhood and adult perspective.  Loss is conveyed with all the intensity of a boy's perception, but acquires new resonance in the brooding consciousness of the older man."
